Earth Witchcraft: The Earth Element

Earth Witchcraft: The Earth Element uses grounding, forest bathing, and earthing energy to connect with Mother Earth in spellcraft with Plants By Laurali! This is part of my spellcraft series on the four elements and the Chinese elements and how to use them in the craft.

When I think of the earth element, I think of the warm, cozy creature comforts of Mother Earth. I think of soil, trees, plants, and gardens. I think of a feeling of belonging and a simple place in time.

How many times have you been in a bad mood and have taken a trip to the forest or beach, only to be instantly brought back to life? The natural remedy of the earth element heals, restores, and replenishes. It is loving, caring, and nurturing in its own right.

What if you could take the magic of nature and bring it into your craft? The majority of my practice as a green witch uses the earth element. Typically, I’ll add a second element, but the first is always earth-based.

My daily practice always includes soil, plants, herbs, and the grounding energy of mushroom witchcraft. Anything belonging to the earth, anything plant-based makes for down-to-earth spell ingredients that are naturally healing and restorative.

Using the earth element in your practice doesn’t have to be complicated. It shouldn’t be. The earth simplifies things, it brings it back to a place of calm and peacefulness, which is something we should all strive for in our practice.

In green witchery, I use the natural resources that are all around me. Everything from a stick to a rock formation can be used in my practice. Even something as mundane as graveyard dirt can be used as a powerful spell ingredient to create change!

Today, I am going to talk about earth witchcraft and how to incorporate the element of earth into your green witchcraft practice! The magical properties of the earth can be used in everything from green kitchen witch recipes to natural remedies. Let’s get started, shall we?

Earth Witchcraft: The Earth Element

Using earth witchcraft can prove to be fruitful and beneficial! I use the earth element all of the time in my green hearthcraft practice. Everything from kitchen witchery to growing a garden is part of green magic, which is essentially what earth witchcraft is.

The earth creates a feeling of warmth and safety. It is often associated with the root chakra and the colors of rust, a combination of red and earth tones. The color green is also associated with the earth and brings a feeling of calm, healing, and growth.

When using the earth element, be sure to keep in mind the feelings that the root chakra conveys. The root chakra is red and denotes home, stability, and financial security. It also brings up feelings of safety and comfort, which is what the element of earth is all about.

When working with the earth element, it’s important to visualize the colors associated with it when doing spellwork. This proves especially true if you like to visualize your spell coming to life.

Another thing you can do is perform spells in the heart of nature. Nature should be at the heart of everything you do, especially if you consider yourself a plant witch. Working with plants requires a strong earth element.

This includes working with plant spirits, tree spirits, mushroom spirits, gemstones, and any kind of dirt or potting soil. If you work with any kind of animal witchcraft, you are working with magical earth properties.

Animals, just like their human counterparts, are made from the earth. Animals use the earth for food, foraging, and natural resources. Without the earth, much like us, they would not exist. Therefore, any kind of animal magic can be used in Earthcraft.

Think of the Earth as a rich and fertile element that provides energy and sustenance to all living creatures, no matter how big or small. Earth is associated with the winter season, midnight, gnomes, and the direction of the north. Look to the earth for creature comforts.

In witchcraft, earth pairs well with the wood and fire elements! Wood is a Chinese element that corresponds with mental clarity and spiritual growth. The fire element symbolizes cleansing, consecration, rituals, and great speed.

Additionally, I find that the earth element pairs well with water, especially as it pertains to water witchcraft. Watercraft is healing, and cleansing, and goes well with sea witchcraft and swamp witchcraft, bringing your witchcraft to a whole new level of existence.

You can sift sand through your fingers at the beach or use a monstera leaf to cleanse and protect under a waterfall. This is a great way to combine earth and water into a makeshift spell that works wonders!

You’ll often find that pairing the earth element with another element increases its powers! The same can be said for air witchcraft. Something as simple as blowing herbs or dirt from your hands combines the air element with that of the earth.

The same can be said with the Chinese metal element. You can use a metal bowl to hold your plant material or place a travel spell in your car, which is made from steel, and widely used in car manufacturing.

As you can see, the earth goes well with all of the elements! The most important thing to note is that you are using plant-based material at the heart of everything you do in your green witchcraft practice. Without earth witchcraft, you couldn’t be the green witch you are today!

The earth element can be used in spells for grounding, hiking, forest bathing, and earthing! You might like to try, The Hiking Pretty Spell for Natural Beauty and Attractiveness to get started. As a green witch, you are going to be using the earth element often.

In a Day in the Life of a Green Witch, the earth provides a feeling of safety and nurturing! It holds many restorative powers, much like water, only more rigid. This is because Earth is associated with the planet Saturn, the planet of restriction and boundaries.

The water element is more fluid while the earth element holds provisions. A bit of earth or plant materia can act as a container for a spell. It needs boundaries, restrictions, and the rules of attraction. In some ways, it can prove to be difficult to work with.

However, getting to know the earth in a deep down, personal way can become a profoundly life-changing experience for any kind of witch. The earth wants to get to know you. It wants you to work for its affections and to stay within its limitations and boundaries.

This is why, in my plant spirit witchcraft practice, I treat my spell ingredients as living, breathing creatures with the ability to bring my spell to life. Each plant ingredient, gemstone, stick, or leaf is chosen with great tenderness, love, and care. Then, and only then, do I incorporate it into the spell I am crafting.

It’s important to think of the earth element as something that can work with you and give spiritual meaning to your practice! You can use it by itself or add one or two elements to your spell for collaboration. It’s also important to know there are boundaries to EarthCraft.

It’s up to the witchcraft practitioner to break through those boundaries by spending time with Mother Nature! You can do this through wildcrafting, foraging, hiking, camping, and forest bathing. You get brownie points for collecting your natural spell ingredients seasonally!
